Rumor Removal: 3 Myths About Tooth Extractions

Although your dentist typically does everything they can to preserve your natural teeth, there are circumstances in which they might suggest an extraction. For instance, if you have a tooth that’s so decayed or damaged that it can’t be effectively treated with a tooth-colored filling or a root canal and dental crown, removing it may be the only way to safeguard your smile.

It’s natural to feel nervous about your upcoming procedure, but many rumors are circulating among the general public about tooth extractions that might have negatively impacted your understanding. Continue reading to learn 3 falsehoods you shouldn’t believe!

Myth #1: It’s Going to Hurt

Your dentist understands that many patients develop anxiety around more invasive treatments, like removing broken or injured teeth. You might even avoid scheduling your procedure if you’re overly afraid that it will hurt.

Thankfully, many providers offer different types of sedation to help you remain calm and comfortable throughout your visit. For example, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is considered safe for most people and is inhaled through a gas mask placed over your nose. The effects kick in immediately and dissipate within moments once you stop inhaling the medications.

Oral conscious sedation is another popular option and is usually prescribed as a pill that you’ll be asked to take before arriving for your scheduled procedure. That way, the drugs will take effect by the time your dentist begins.

Myth #2: Recovery Takes Forever

If you’re concerned that you’ll have to take many days off work to heal after your treatment, you can safely set your fears aside. Although in some circumstances it might take longer, most people can resume normal activities within a few days of their procedure.

However, your mouth must form a blood clot at the extraction site to prevent a painful condition called dry socket. If it’s damaged or dislodged, you might develop an ache that won’t fade for up to several weeks. Following your provider’s post-op instructions is the best way to recover quickly and without developing complications.

Myth #3: I Don’t Need to Replace My Pulled Tooth

You might think you can save on additional expenses by leaving the gap in your grin after your extraction, especially if it’s located in the back of your mouth where no one can see. Unfortunately, your remaining pearly whites are likely to shift out of alignment to fill in the empty spaces, which can wear down your enamel unevenly or prematurely. This increases the risk of cavities or other injuries.

You can preserve your grin by replacing your missing tooth as quickly as possible. Your dentist will discuss the different options and recommend an appropriate restoration based on your individual circumstances.
