The holidays are here and if you have children, you’re probably trying to find just the right gift to give them magical memories they’ll always remember. Many parents also look for small gifts to fill stockings, in addition to the presents they purchase. While chocolate and candy canes are popular offerings, remember that sugary treats will attract bacteria that contribute to tooth decay so you may want to consider something else in their place. After all, you wouldn’t want to kick off the new year with a trip to the dentist. Instead, try some of these 3 stocking stuffers that will keep their teeth happy and healthy!
Item #1: A New Toothbrush
Did you know that it’s recommended that you replace your child’s toothbrush at least every 3 to 4 months? A new one with your little one’s favorite character would be a great addition to their stocking. You can find a variety of toothbrushes in stores and online featuring popular characters from movies and television shows that they’ll be excited to see. On top of that, many toothbrushes light up or play music to let kids know how long they should be brushing. There’s no better way to add a dose of fun to their daily oral hygiene routine!
Item #2: Flavored Dental Products
Plenty of children have a hard time with the strong minty flavor used for toothpaste and mouthwash. Fortunately, there are plenty of products available for little ones that use child-friendly flavors like strawberry or bubble gum, for example. You’ll want to ensure that anything you purchase contributes to their dental well-being, so find options that contain fluoride which reinforces the protective enamel of their pearly whites. Also, look for alternatives that have the ADA Seal of Approval to know that it’s safe for kids.
Item #3: Healthier Snacks
While your little one may be dreaming of sugar plums, as a parent, you want to ensure they’re consuming foods that are good for them and won’t rot their teeth. Feel free to include more wholesome foods in their stockings in place of candy like raisins, nuts, or sugar-free gum.
Another festive favorite is fresh fruit. In some cultures, the toe of the stocking is filled with an orange which happens to contain vitamin C for gum health. Other parents include an apple in their child’s stocking every year to benefit their overall well-being.
Though candy is easy to find this time of year, it’s not the only way to put a smile on your child’s face. Providing them with gifts that contribute to their dental health can keep their grin in prime condition well into the new year!
